木 is also the 64th indexing component in the Table of Indexing Chinese Character Components predominantly adopted by Simplified Chinese dictionaries published in mainland China, with its alternative form 朩 being its associated indexing component.
In the Chinese Wu Xing ("Five Phases"), 木 represents the element Wood.

As an isolated character it is one of the kyōiku kanji or kanji taught in elementary school in Japan. It is a first grade kanji. It is present in the name of Japan (日本, Nippon) meaning "Origin of the Sun".
